Basic Intro to the island of Skiathos

Skiathos, a small but beautiful island in the Sporades Group of Greek islands, is only around 50 sq. kms. in size but has an unbelievable 60+ beautiful beaches around its coastline. One claim to fame is that part of the film, 'Mama Maria' was filmed on the island. The south east of the island is densely forested, mainly with pines, but with fertile farmland around many villages and Skiathos town itself. It's an island that offers, depending on your choice of location, a quiet, relaxing, away-from-it-all holiday or one ejoying excursions, sports activities and a lively nightlife.

Tourism and agriculture are the mainstay of the island's economy with olives, fruit and walnuts being important products. The visitor to Skiathos town, with a home population of around 4,000 people, will find a traditional style town sprawling over two hills. It boasts many interesting churches and other buildings, including a castle. Churches that are on the must-see list include those of the Cathedral with its collection of icons and holy relics; the Church of St Mary of the Lake where there is a memorial to Alexandros Papadiamantis, the famous writer of the late 19th and early 20th century; visit also the churches of Agios Fanarios and Agios Nikolas. Also in Skiathos town is the family home of Alexandros Papadiamantis which has been preserved and made into a small museum commemorating his life and work. Easily accessible is the monastery of Panayia Evangelistra, located just below the peak of Mount Karaflizanaka, which was founded in 1794 and completed 12 years later. At its busiest there were 70 monks living and working there and the visitor will be rewarded by its sense of peace and understanding of how life was lived in such a place. Another monastery well worth a visit is that of Panagia Kounistra, about 10 kms. from Skiathos town.

Jutting out from the port of Skiathos is the narrow Bourtzi peninsula on which can be found the ruins of a Venetian fort dating from the 13th century. Today, on the Bourtzi, amongst the pine trees and enjoying fantastic views is an open-air theatre, hosting productions throughout the summer.

Excursions run daily to the northern tip ot the island, to Kastro beach, below the old hill-top city of Kastro. Blue waters, pale golden sands and an old mediaeval town to explore are just a boat trip away. It is only possible to reach Kastro by road (dirt towards the end!) if you are prepared for an hour's walk at the end of the drive. Far easier to go by boat!

If it's one of the beaches that you've come to Skiathos to enjoy then you can add Koukounaries, Banana, Kalamaki, Achladies, Ftelia, Maratha and Kanapitsa to name just a few. With their pale golden sands, clear, translucent waters and, often, a backdrop of pines encircling the beach they are perfect for the sand, sea and sunshine holiday.
